Wheel thrown glazed stoneware, 4 1/2” x 3'“ x 3”
Robert D. Boyer studied Materials Science at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He teaches and produces ceramics at Indigo Fire, a community studio in Belmont, Massachusetts, and currently lives in Somerville, Massachusetts.
Boyer has been working in clay for over twenty years, making on the wheel and exploring a variety of handbuilding techniques. His inspirations typically come from highly repetitive patterns in nature and leverage his background in the sciences, looking to atomic structure and algorithmic thought processes as often as plowed fields or plant geometries. Although Boyer’s interests span a wide range of ceramic ware, sculpture and abstraction, his current focus has been surface design via carved inlay, often with additional patterned layers superimposed in the glazing process.
