Fontinha got his BFA in Painting from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, and his MFA from Lesley University. He currently teaches at a high school on the South Shore and has spent the last ten summers painting in the Nagano prefecture of Japan. He recently exhibited in the Boston Young Contemporaries show and is a frequent participant in shows sponsored by the Cambridge Art Association.

Joseph Fontinha makes paintings that are connections between human and plastic stories. Extended viewing and a decentering of focus are primary concerns of his work. He reduces his paintings to brushwork that he will absolutely not negotiate. His paintings are a forensic account of several moments in their making.
