Here and Away
9.12.08 - 10.31.08
Featuring work by Deb Hickey and Adrienne Landry

postcard of Here and Away

The waning, temperate days of September taunt us with memories of summer even as the demands of autumn force us closer to home.

13FOREST Gallery captures this seasonal pull with Here and Away, an exhibit of work by Deb Hickey and Adrienne Landry that explores the places we visit and those we call home.

Both artists in Here and Away speak through the language of architecture and landscape to tell stories of familiar and anonymous New England locales.

Deb Hickey is a former Arlington resident now living in Providence. A photographer by training, she paints and etches into phototransfers on wood to create Technicolor portraits of Arlington and Rhode Island. The strong lines and intense colors of her images elevate her subjects, adding an iconic quality to well-known landmarks such as the Arlington Heights water tower, or evoking the overlooked beauty of ordinary storefronts in Providence.

Adrienne Landry lives in Arlington but summers on Maine's Monhegan Island. The oil paintings selected for this show juxtapose the carefully constructed interiors and exteriors of Arlington with the more relaxed architecture and open skies of a small but staggeringly beautiful island. Order and calmness permeate Landry's urban and rural scenes, creating a sense of meditative wonder.

Here and Away highlights Arlington and its artists in honor of the community's annual September Town Day celebration. The public will have an opportunity to meet the exhibition's two artists during separate events. Deb Hickey will give a talk at a reception on Tuesday, October 7 from 6-8 pm, with the talk beginning at 7 pm. Adrienne Landry will be on hand for an artist's reception on Thursday, October 16 from 6-8 pm. The Landry reception is part of the new Third Thursday series in East Arlington's Capitol Square, during which area businesses offer special events and promotions.
